Fourth of July Festivities Along the Shore:

Michigan City Fireworks Spectacular 2025

The Michigan City special events’ Michigan City Fireworks Spectacular celebration will be taking place in Washington Park. The annual Independence Day celebration starts at sundown, so bring a blanket and find a good spot in the park to watch the fireworks take off! They are being launched over Lake Michigan and can be seen from the beach, anywhere in the park, or the Uptown Arts District. Parking is on a first-come, first-served basis. If the parking lot is full, it is also available along the streets of downtown. The parking lot closes after it’s full, so plan ahead and book a JOYRide! This celebration is the perfect way to end the holiday, so don’t miss it.

Washington Park Beach Day

What better way to spend the Fourth of July than at the beach? Washington Park Beach will be open from 5 a.m. to midnight on the Fourth. Tan on the beach, swim in the lake, and grab lunch at one of the restaurants listed in this guide. Then, stick around for the fireworks show at sundown. For a fun beach day, you may want to consider packing sunscreen, a beach blanket, towels, and a sweater for after the sun sets. The beach permits coolers, so don’t forget your favorite summer snacks! When packing your cooler, don’t forget that glass bottles or containers of any kind are prohibited, and alcohol is not permitted within 50’ of roadways or parking lots. The beach is not pet-friendly.

Where to Eat

Sunset Grille at the Beach

Located right on the beach, the Sunset Grille is the best place to grab a meal when spending the day at the beach. The restaurant has two places to eat, including The Concession and Rooftop Cantina. The Concession is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Rooftop Cantina is open from 4 p.m. until the park closes. The Concession features everything from burgers to fried clam strips. They even have a dessert menu for a sweet treat after lunch or dinner. The Rooftop Cantina has a selection of appetizers, including a shrimp cocktail, veggie platters, wraps, and whitefish mousse. The main attraction is the drinks. The Rooftop Cantina has something for everyone with cocktails, mocktails, wine, seltzers, and beer. Sip on a summertime drink while watching the sun set over the water.

Bartlett’s Fish Camp

Located near the Old Lighthouse Museum, Bartlett’s Fish Camp is open from 3-10:00 p.m. on Fridays. The restaurant features a variety of foods and the only raw bar located on Indiana’s coastline. Try their trio of ceviches, oyster tower, or seared tuna. If you’re feeling adventurous, have one of their signature Oyster Shooters. Or, munch on one of their shareables! The restaurant also has salads, sandwiches, pasta, and many other options. Dine on fresh seafood while enjoying a beautiful view of the marina and the lake. The establishment is also pet-friendly, so bring your furry friend along for the meal!

Matey’s Bar and Restaurant

For a more relaxed meal, sit down for a bite and a beer at Matey’s Bar and Restaurant. With three towering floors, the restaurant features an expansive menu, complete with shareables, handhelds, and many more. Try their Margarita Tower for a group of three or more, or their Pineapple Mango Madness cocktail that is served in an actual pineapple! The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Tips and Tricks for a Safe and Fun Holiday:

  • Just Pack the Essentials: If you’re enjoying a day at the beach, bring your swimsuit, sunscreen, and towels, but don’t overpack!
  • Have a Designated Driver: If you decide to spend the day at Matey’s, make sure you designate someone to drive you home or book a JOYRide!
  • Take Precautions: Make sure you drink plenty of water, take breaks from the sun, and wear sunscreen when spending time outside.
  • Firework Safety: Washington Park Beach does not allow outside fireworks. However, if you decide to celebrate the Fourth with your own fireworks, be sure to keep a safe distance from people and flammable materials, designate a sober person to set them off, and keep water nearby.
  • Rules and regulations: Read up on Washington Park Beach’s rules and regulations before entering.  They can be found here: https://michigancityin.gov/city-departments/parks-recreation/rules-and-regulations/
