Boat race weekend is one of the busiest, most fun weekends in Michigan City. Each summer, Washington Park is transformed into one of the most exciting destinations of the year for the Great Lakes Grand Prix. The lakefront becomes filled with high-speed raceboats, live music, food, and more. If you’re planning to spend the weekend by the water, here’s everything you need to know to make the most of one of Michigan City’s biggest events.

What Is the Great Lakes Grand Prix?

The Great Lakes Grand Prix is not only one of the busiest, most exciting events of the summer, but also a week-long celebration of our community. In addition to the offshore powerboat racing, events are held all week long leading up to the boat races. Throughout race week, visitors can enjoy community events, live entertainment, a boat parade, a brewfest, food vendors, family activities, VIP experiences, and opportunities to meet race teams and see the boats up close.

What Happens During Race Weekend?

Since this guide is publishing on Thursday, you’re arriving just as the excitement begins. This evening is the opening ceremony, followed by the VIP party, both at Stop Zero Beach Cantina. Then, enjoy live entertainment on Washington Park Beach boardwalk. On Friday, stroll around the food court and entertainment alley, and visit the brewfest for craft beer enthusiasts. Then, head to Shoreline Brewery for live entertainment and an afterparty.

Saturday is a busy day, with a car show, VIP tent, food court and entertainment alley, offshore testing, qualifying, multiple race heats, a downtown block party, the Boat Parade, and live music. Then, Sunday is all about championship racing, giving fans one last chance to watch some of the fastest offshore powerboats in the world compete on Lake Michigan.
