What Is Earth Day?

Earth Day, which takes place on April 22nd, is a reminder to protect and care for our planet. It was founded in 1970 and has since become a global celebration dedicated to environmental protection, conservation, and sustainability. It is commonly celebrated with community cleanups, tree planting, environmental education in schools, recycling, conserving energy, and planting native species.

Celebrate At The Earth Month Extravaganza

To round out your Earth Day experience, make plans to attend Michigan City’s 5th annual Earth Month Extravaganza hosted by the Michigan City Sustainability Commission in partnership with the Tree Board, Parks & Recreation Department, and the Mayor. This free, all-ages event takes place on Saturday, April 25, from 12 to 3 pm at the Michigan City Senior Center, located at Two on the Lake.

The outdoor activities begin earlier in the day, including a tree planting at 9:00 am and a beach clean-up at 10:00 am. These hands-on opportunities are a great way to give back to the community and make a visible difference!

During the event, there will also be other attractions, including a tree giveaway, an electric vehicle showcase, informational displays, guided hikes, games, and crafts. It’s a great way to learn more about sustainability while having fun with our community! If you want to partake in the swap, you can bring seeds and sports equipment.

Happy Earth Day!

Regardless of how you choose to celebrate Earth Day, the important thing is to give back and appreciate our beautiful planet. This could mean going for a hike, planting new flowers, and attending the Earth Month Extravaganza, but it could also look like recycling or taking some time to learn about what the holiday means.

Even small actions, like reducing waste or planting something new, contribute to a larger impact. This Earth Day, take the opportunity to celebrate in a way that feels meaningful to you while supporting the places and people that make Michigan City so special.
